TFH 9/8: To Boldy Go

Their Finest Hour celebrates greatness and innovation wherever it's to be found. Today, we return 45 years exactly to September 8, 1966.

The US/USSR Space Race, driven by the Cold War, captured headlines in the news and the imagination of Americans. We looked to the skies and heavens, and on our television screens, we watched Star Trek!

On this day in 1966, Star Trek first aired.

Series creator Gene Roddenberry didn't have a hit at the time - the program was mired in the ratings and wasn't always given a favorable time slot - but he produced a show that still captures imaginations through itself and its progeny today. The enduring success of the Star Trek franchise is to be greatly commended. Let's leave out the over-the-top fans for now. ;-)

The essence of Star Trek is rooted in human curiosity and our need to push the boundaries of achievement. As is used in the opening:

Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.

Our spirit of exploration and adventure took us to Earth orbit, to the Moon, and one day will take us to Mars and beyond. The human race must be bold in both our dreams and achievements, and vehicles that capture and feed our dreams and imagination through entertainment are valuable.

Thank you, Gene Roddenberry, for your creation of Star Trek. There can be no doubt that a TV series launched 45 years ago today that still generates new fans of the franchise and genre is a finest hour!
