Forty years ago today during the Games of the XIX Olympiad in Mexico City, American Bob Beamon clinched the Gold Medal in the long jump with a world-record leap of 8.90 meters - 29 1/2 feet - that shattered the previous record by 55 centimeters/21 3/4 inches!
The record stood for the next 23 years until broken by American Mike Powell in 1991. Bob Beamon, American star athlete and Olympic Gold Medalist, this day in 1968 was your finest hour!
"[I]f we fail, then the whole world,…all that we have known and cared for…will sink into the abyss of a new Dark Age made more sinister, and perhaps more protracted, by the lights of perverted science. Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves that…men will still say, 'This was their finest hour.'”
